Wood Recipe Book Holder Plans

Wood Recipe Book Holder Plans

It's true... I only used scrap wood to make this cookbook stand, and I also used ZERO screws. I was able to use my handy RYOBI 18-Volt ONE+ AirStrike Brad Nailer Kit.This will be a good time to tell you RYOBI sponsored this post, but brilliant cookbook stand idea and opinions are all my own!

We have a cook in this house, and that cook's name is NOT Thalita. I mean, I CAN cook, but I'm not very good, and Marquis both enjoys it and is good at it, so naturally, he ends up doing the majority of the cooking. I thought it'd be nice to have a place for him to prop cookbooks when he does use them, and I imagine I'll be using this myself whenI cook or bake!I used scrap pieces for this, as I mentioned before, which consisted of a 2x4, 1x3, 1x2, and leftover 2x12.

Now here's how I cut them:2x12 into a 13 length1x3 into 12 length1x2 into 12 length2x4 into 2 4 pieces with a 37 degree angleI used out trusty old mitre saw for this!

Mike's Cookbook Holder

To start, I (or I should say, Marquis - he wanted to try out the new tool too!) nailed the 1x3 into the 2x12, then added the 1x2 like so:

Then I measured 3 in from each side of the back and front of the stand using painter's tape. I did this so I would know where to nail into the support pieces behind.

Once I nailed the supports in, I filled all of the holes with wood filler and lightly sanded. This means ZERO proof of nails going in anywhere, which is why I used nails on the front of the piece to begin with.

And to give you an idea of what this looks like from behind, here's a shot. I made sure to stain the whole thing in case I ever want to use this on the island - that way all angles look good!

Now, I have a few other pretty spectacular projects to share with you, all of which RYOBI sponsored, all using different tools. Curious?

Je Cookbook Stand

Thank you toKregfor this DIY cookbook stand project! All opinions are entirely my own. This post also contains affiliate links, but nothing that I wouldn’t recommend wholeheartedly. Read my full disclosurehere.

I’ve got a news flash for you… Mother’s Day is less than one month away!! So now is the time to get started on your DIY gifts for mama.

Today we’re sharing an idea that is absolutely perfect for Mother’s Day (or really anytime you need a good gift for someone that loves to cook or cooks a lot)…..a DIY wooden cookbook stand!

Book Holder Stand For Display Gifts

You will need to use a scroll saw to cut out the house shape – but alternatively, you could use a jigsaw instead (Learn more about the different types of saws here). Otherwise, it incorporates only a handful of beginning woodworking tools.

If you’ve been following Making Manzanita for a bit, you know that we arebig fansof the Kreg pocket hole system. We built tons of projects using our original K5 Pocket Hole Jig, we even have a super detailed guide and video about how to use it that you can check out here.

In 2021, Kreg released brand new pocket hole systems that replaced the K4 and K5, and the upgrades are pretty freakin’ awesome.

The new 720PRO(which we were using for this DIY cookbook stand) andthe 520PRO(which replaced the smaller K4 system) were improved a ton, the most noticeable change being that they are easier to set up and use – score.

How

My favorite new feature of 720PRO and 520PRO is the clamp that you don’t have to adjust anymore. You should clamp it down and it automatically adjusts to match the thickness of your wood, so cool, right?

Pocket hole joinery is definitely one of the easiest ways to join wood in woodworking projects. It’s our favorite hidden weapon forbeginning woodworkers!

Want to learn more?I wrotea super detailed guide & created a video all about how to set up your Kreg 720PRO Pocket Hole and use it, so be sure to check that out too!

We teamed up with our friends Kreg again for these cookbook stand woodworking plans and we are sharing them online for free, which are now available on KregTool.com!

Kreg’s website is chocked full of so many easy-to-follow FREE woodworking plans! I promise that you are going to find so much inspiration while you’re there!

Because the front lip on the bottom of the cookbook holder was so narrow, we needed to use Kreg’s Micro Pocket Hole kit – which we have never needed to use before!

The Micro Drill Guide Kit makes pocket holes that are 25% smaller in diameter and are not as far out from the edge of the wood. It works great for smaller projects and thinner stock. In fact, you can use it with 1/2″ thick wood and pieces of wood that are as small as 1″ wide.

To use the Micro Drill Guide, you simply swap out the drill block on the pocket hole jig. It quickly clicks into place and you’re good to start drilling pocket holes.

The version that was used worked with the 720 and 720Pro pocket hole jigs, but Kreg also makes a Micro Drill Guide Kit for the 520 pocket hole jig if you have that one instead.

Didn’t the DIY cookbook holder turn out great? I love the finish that we ended up with – which is a gray wash. Learn how to get the gray wash wood look in this tutorial.

The cookbook stand holds cookbooks large and small! I was sure to make it large enough to hold my Magnolia Table cookbook, which is the largest size cookbook I’ve seen.

I just LOVE how the wooden cookbook stand turned out. The house shape is definitely my favorite part – it is so unique and unlike anything I’ve seen before.

**Already on hand: clear lacquer spray, 80 & 150 grit sandpaper, dark walnut stain, white paint for gray wash, wood glue, and all tools required, like theKreg Pocket-Hole Jig 720Proand the Kreg 720 micro pocket hole kit**

Because I had to buy both a whole box of screws and plugs, the price of the cookbook holder ended up being more than I originally thought it was going to be.

However, if I were to make this again, I would only need to purchase the wood, hinge, and drawer pull…so the price to build the cookbook stand in the future would be closer to $36.50.

If you want to build this DIY cookbook stand, we’ve done all the hard work for you! All you need to do is hop over to Kreg’s website and check out the full detailed tutorial.

At the bottom of the tutorial, you’ll also see a link to download the woodworking plans (for free) to get all of the detailed measurements.

We’ve found that many couples don't know how to start renovating their homes, which is why our passion is teaching others how to make their house a home they love - one DIY at a time.As you may know,  we’re in the middle of a kitchen renovation and today’s project goes hand-in-hand. Let’s make a DIY Cookbook Stand! This cookbook holder not only allows for perfect visibility on your kitchen counter while you’re cooking or baking up your culinary masterpiece, practicing on your favorite recipes, or grandma’s beloved recipe cards, but the clear acrylic sheet will protect those precious pages that somehow hold the answers to life, love, and a full belly (aka spills and splatters). But wait… there’s more! I designed it so that it folds completely flat for easy storage in a kitchen drawer or bookshelf, saving you valuable counter space. While it can hold heavy cookbooks quite easily, if you’re more tech savvy, you can even use this cookbook stand for your tablet or other electronic device! I’m thrilled to partner with Arrow Fastener on this project.

I was able to make this DIY cookbook stand out of scrap wood and various materials I had on-hand. I used some leftover white oak from our DIY nightstands (including that beautiful fluted wood!) and the brass rod cutoffs from our basement theater bar tables. If you were to purchase all the materials new, I’d estimate this project will cost less than $20. Williams-Sonoma, Sur La Table, Pottery Barn, etc. sell beautiful cookbook stands, but they’re pretty pricey, typically starting at $50
