I wanted to be able to take turmeric in a way that was enjoyable, and to pair it with some other healthy ingredients.

According to Wikipedia, Turmeric is a flowering plant, Curcuma longa of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, the roots of which are used in cooking.

It does look a lot like ginger, with the little toes growing out of a larger part of the root. Its peel is layered looking, and that gives it a striped appearance. The flesh is a lovely bright orange color.

This is where a really good blender comes in handy. All of the strings from the ginger, and the other ingredients will be completely pureed, leaving just a small amount of pulp behind.

I like that this tonic has some texture, and isn't just a thin juice. However, if you like a thinner juice, you could strain it.

If you follow my Facebook Page, and you should, you know that I have more than a crush on turmeric. I'm slightly obsessed, but not at the point of stalking...yet.

Turmeric helps to calm inflammation and has been great in providing me with relief from a two-year running injury that I've been fighting for way too long. I took turmeric for a while and then stopped, not sure it was working.

Anti Inflammatory, Immune Boosting Turmeric Tonic

The pain came back, bigger than ever when I wasn't consuming turmeric, so back I am to the turmeric tribe. And it doesn't get much easier than making this recipe for an anti-inflammatory lemon turmeric tonic.

Not convinced on the merits of turmeric yet?Mind Body Greenreported that roundworms grown on small amounts of curcumin (found in turmeric) expanded their lifespan by 39%. Similar effects were found in fruit flies and mice. Then there's a whole host of benefits, to just name a few:

As I mentioned, you can take it by capsule, use it in powder form, or better yet, get the root whole, which you can find at most grocery stores.

While turmeric is powerful, it also has great staining capabilities, so definitely use gloves, paper towels and/or parchment to keep the fresh turmeric from leaving its mark.

Adding some lemon to the tonic lightens things up and then you can also throw in a little sweetener if you like.

It's always a good idea to include ground black pepper when using turmeric since it helps increase its bioavailability, which just means you can put the turmeric to better use in your body.

Better still is to drink your anti-inflammatory turmeric tonic with a meal that includes some pepper and fat. You'll get it where it needs to go in no time, without having to pass through much of the liver.

At least that’s what I like to think when I’m drinking turmeric tonic, which may (or may not) prolong that admirable longevity I’m boasting about. I don’t know how true those claims are, but I do know that I had my first taste of it in Los Angeles, at Sqirl, and I loved it.

Turmeric Amla Ginger Juice

The juice thing has come to Paris, but they’re not widely available freshly made. And I haven’t really seen fresh turmeric juice anywhere, although I haven’t really looked. Usually I don’t get farther than the wine aisle at the grocery store.

I recently had to give up coffee, which others online were freaking out about, more than I was, although I still have an espresso once in a while. (Which seemed to calm everybody down.) So I was looking for something that would rev me up during the day. Some say turmeric has all sorts of healthful properties, which is certainly a bonus, but I really enjoy the flavor of it; it’s earthy and ruddy, but not bitter or off-putting. Sometimes poured over ice, or just on its own, with hints of citrus and a jolt of fresh ginger, I wanted to have it more often, which meant making it at home, rather than jetting back to L.A.

In other news on the home front, we also stopped drinking store-bought orange juice in favor of carrot juice. I haven’t found it fresh in any of the natural foods stores in Paris, just shelf-stable carrot juice in bottles on the shelves. I made the mistake of taking a swig of it the morning after Romain brought it home, and it was like chugging a glass of tepid unseasoned carrot soup. Not the first thing I want to drink when I wake up. Or really, at any time of the day.

Turmeric Tonic With Ginger And Lemon

, which I had to practice pronouncing before I went out to buy one. Repeating the word over-and-over under my breath on the 56 bus, I ended up at Darty, a store that specializes in large and small appliances, whose website listed a ton of juicers (which I’ll say in English from now one, since that’s easier to write, than spell

I had planned to get a medium-priced model with a good amount of power, but saw a very inexpensive one for only €29, 99 ($37) which was a lot smaller than the one I came in to buy. Even though I have a bigger kitchen now than I used to, space is still an issue. Plus I think every juicer comes with a warning that you’re only going to use it only a few times before you put it in your cabinet and forget about it, or sell it.

So I decided to go with the €29, 99 model. When I went to their website on my phone to check the wattage (power), I noticed it was marked €5 less than the price in the store. When I asked the very nice salesperson if they would honor that price in their own store, she said no, but I could order it online and pick it up in the store. But I would have to wait an hour for the order to process. Hmmm…

, because it’ll be more expensive if I do” she got a (very) good laugh out of that. Still, I wasn’t getting €5 off, but €29, 99 was a pretty good price for what turned out to be a fairly powerful juicer, at least for my needs, namely, juicing turmeric and ginger.
