Black Eyed Peas Curry (indian Lobia Masala)
Today I prepared this dish in my electric pressure cooker, Instant Pot DUO60 6 QT. You can use any equivalent electric pressure cooker likeMealthy Multipot.
Lobia masala is basically a curry made with lobia, along with onions, tomatoes, and various Indian spices. It is best paired with steamed rice and chapatis. This rich and delicious dal is ideal for special occasions when you want to treat your family to a finger-licking meal.
Black-eyed peas or black-eyed beans are among the most nourishing varieties of legumes. The name refers to the black spot on the creamy skin of peas. These are versatile beans that go well with many recipes.
Black Eyed Peas (lobiya)
Black-eyed peas havenumerous health benefits. They are a great source of protein for Vegans and are considered nourishing because it contains almost all the essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and C. Other essential ones are folic acid, iron, calcium, manganese, Thiamine, zinc, copper, phosphorus, Folate, etc.
1. Beans contain indigestible complex sugars that cause gas and are hard on tummies and can cause some digestive issues like bloating and flatulence. Therefore, soaking and sprouting the beans is an excellent way to reduce the uneasiness produced by them.
2. Soaking dried beans ahead of time (soaked for at least 3-4 hours) will cook faster than the beans that have not been soaked. Depending on how old the beans are, cooking time may vary.
Black Eyed Peas Curry With Coconut
Firstly, soak the black-eyed peas in abundant water for four or more hours, submerging them. When you are ready to cook, drain the water.
Close the lid securely, and turn the vent to SEALING. Select thePRESSURE COOK/MANUAL (High Pressure)setting and set the cooking time to12 minutes for firmer beans & 14 minutes for softer beans.
When the instant pot beeps, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then release any remaining pressure before removing the lid.
Black Eyed Beans With Spinach And Fennel
If you are using canned black-eyed peas, make sure to drain and rinse them with water. You should reduce the water for cooking, i.e., 1:1 canned black-eyed peas to water ratio. It will take 4 minutes, followed by Natural Pressure Release.
If you forget to soak, try soaking for at least 1 hour in hot water, press MANUAL/PRESSURE COOK (High Pressure), and set the timer to 20+ minutes.

White Lobia Sundal(காராமணி சுண்டல்) Recipe
This Black Eyed Peas Curry recipe also uses both whole as well as powdered spices. Thus, has piquant, aromatic and has complex flavors. To cut down on the spice level, the quantity of black pepper and red chili powder can be reduced.
Pairing this curry with a simple steamed rice would be the ideal thing to have a homely wholesome meal ready in a matter of minutes. It can also be savored with Naan, Appam, Idiyappam, Parotta or soft dosas like Poha Dosa, sponge dosa or Neer Dosa.
This Kerala special lobia curry is an easy recipe and if you have an affinity towards this particular legume, you must definitely give it a try.
Healthy Instant Pot Black Eyed Peas Curry
1. Rinse1 cupdried black eyed beans in water for a couple of times. Then add the rinsed beans in a 2 liter pressure cooker.
I have cooked the beans in a stovetop pressure cooker. You can also cook them in a pan on the stovetop or in the Instant Pot adding water as needed.
If using canned black eyed peas, then follow the the recipe from step 5 onwards. Drain the water from the peas and rinse them a few times in water before proceeding with the recipe.

4. When the pressure settles down naturally, open the lid and check if the beans are cooked well. Using a strainer or colander, drain the water and set the cooked beans aside.
The beans have to be completely cooked but not mushy or pasty. If they are under cooked, then add some more water and pressure cook for a few more whistles.
5. While the black eyed beans are getting cooked, you can prep the other ingredients. Chop pearl onions (shallots or onions), tomatoes, ginger, garlic and green chilies.
Lobia Masala Curry (a Curry With Black Eyed Beans)
When sautéing the tomatoes, you can add a few tablespoons of water if the tomato mixture dries up or starts sticking to the pan.
25. On a low to medium-low heat, simmer Black Eyed Peas Curry for 10 to 12 minutes or till the gravy thickens. With a spoon, mash some black eyed beans to thicken the gravy.
27. Serve Black Eyed Peas Curry with steamed rice or Indian breads of your choice. You can garnish the curry with coriander leaves if you want.
