If you haven’t tried jackfruit as a meat substitute yet, then you have some good times ahead. You will be simply amazed at the taste and texture. It doesn’t taste like fruit, let me just say that!
While jackfruit certainly is a fruit, when it’s green and unripe, it has a very neutral flavor and absorbs the flavors of the spices that it’s cooked with. And it has a texture that is just really close to shredded meat!

Vegan Jackfruit With Gravy Recipe
BBQ jackfruit stores really well in the fridge for up to 5 days, so you can absolutely make up the BBQ jackfruit ahead of time. You can also make up a batch of vegan sour cream if you’re making the homemade version (or just use store-bought).
This way, you just have to warm up your tortillas, shred the lettuce and cilantro, slice the red onion and avocado and serve with your lime wedges on the side.
Keep leftover BBQ jackfruit in a covered container in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can reheat it in the microwave, or by spreading it out on a parchment lined baking sheet and heating in the oven at 350°F for 15 minutes or until heated through. If it dries out at all then toss it with more vegan BBQ sauce. It’s also delicious served cold though, and we were eating it cold on tacos with delight.
Jackfruit Tacos (pulled Pork Tacos)
It’s best to only make up as many tacos as you will eat right away. Any other leftovers like shredded lettuce, cilantro, red onion, vegan sour cream, can be stored in separate containers in the fridge.
BBQ jackfruit freezes well for up to 3 months. Let it thaw in the fridge and then reheat it as you like. I don’t recommend freezing any other elements of your tacos, rather store them in separate containers in the fridge and enjoy within a few days.

MESSAGES. from people wanting the recipe. The story was actually watched over 40, 000 times which is quite high for me. I wasn’t originally planning to share the recipe here on the blog but since it was so highly requested, I figured I would go ahead and put the recipe out into the world.
My motivation for this recipe was to provide a fun, easy, and somewhat classic option for vegetarians around the holidays. Growing up, we ate a lot of roasts in the winter months and I wanted to re-create the dish but with a meatless option. ENTER my new favorite friend: jackfruit!
Vegan Bbq Pulled Jackfruit Recipe
Jackfruit does such a great job of mimicking meat and acts as a great substitute for chicken, pork, and beef in recipes. I have a roundup of a ton of great jackfruit recipes if you want to try out some others. I’m a HUGE fan of these BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches.
Isn’t it crazy how much this looks like pot roast? I love it for this :) The savory sauce really helps it tastes like traditional pot roast as well.
We’ll start by sautéing the onion, garlic, and jackfruit for about 5 minutes before adding in the remaining ingredients to make up the sauce. That simmers together for a few more minutes to thicken into a delicious gravy.
Crispy Jackfruit Carnitas!
The chopped carrots and potatoes go straight into the baking dish and then the jackfruit and gravy mixture is poured on top.
When it comes out of the oven, it looks a little sloppy (see photo above) so to give it a prettier presentation, I scooped out all/ most of the jackfruit and placed that on a plate. I then transferred the veggies to a separate several bowl/ tray and then topped it with the jackfruit in the middle and drizzled on any remaining gravy.

EASY: Every now and then I don't mind a more complicated recipe such as my Vegan Tiramisu (so worth it), but for the most part, I like my recipes easy, and I like 'em quick. These jackfruit tacos just require a little sautéing, add some seasonings, then mash, and done. They take less than 30 minutes to prepare. Easy peasy, quick, and so super delicious.

Not only did this life-changing word make me a healthier, happier, more compassionate and environmentally-friendly human being, but it also gave my career a 180-degree flip. JACKFRUIT: the fruit that is the jack of all trades. You can eat this fruit ripe and sweet, which to be honest is not my fave, but where jackfruit really shines is when you get it young and green. At this stage, it's starchy, savoury and is so amazing in that it replicates pulled or shredded meat almost exactly. Except, of course, it's so much better! I swear I was eating these tacos and wondered why in the world would anyone want to eat a chicken when they can have jackfruit!?
TACOS: this Mexican handheld food with endless topping combos is an all-time fave for me. There's an entire day of the week dedicated to tacos called #tacotuesday! So I'm clearly not the only one who get's this excited about tacos. Just as this shirt says, mas tacos por favor.
