Pork Loin Traeger Recipe

Pork Loin Traeger Recipe

Chicken breast is probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of low fat protein sources, but you shouldn’t forget about pork tenderloin. It’s an affordable lean protein source with a similar macronutrient profile to chicken breast. This low fat content, however, makes it fairly easy to overcook and dry out pork tenderloin. That’s why low and slow cooks like this smoked BBQ pork tenderloin are the best way to keep the pork juicy and tender.

You’ll find a visual recipe walkthrough below with ingredient notes and extra tips for smoking and using your Traeger grill. There’s a printable recipe card at the bottom of the post if you’d rather get right to it. Just hop back here if you have any questions.

Traeger

Speaking of chicken, I used the seasoning blend from my slow cooker BBQ chicken thighs for this smoked pork tenderloin. It’s a combination of brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, dry mustard, salt, and black pepper. This is a sweet, smoky, and slightly spicy rub. If you wanted a bit more heat, you could add some cayenne and chili powder like in this Sweet Texas Dry Rub.

Smoking A Boneless Pork Loin · The Typical Mom

Unlike my Traeger smoked chicken breast, this recipe doesn’t call for any oil or binding agent. You’re welcome to use some, but the rub will melt in just fine within 20-30 minutes.

Some remaining fat is okay, but you’ll want to remove any silver skin, a tough connective tissue, before seasoning the pork tenderloin. Silver skin won’t render or dissolve like other connective tissues such as collagen, meaning it will make your finished product tough and chewy.

You should be able to spot any silver skin but if you need help, check out this post on how to trim a pork tenderloin.

I smoked the BBQ pork tenderloins at 225ºF for around 2 hours in a Traeger Pro 575 with Signature pellets. There’s a good chance you’ll have tenderloins that are different sizes. So if you’re using the Traeger probe or checking internal temperature with a meat thermometer, use the largest part of the smaller tenderloin as it will cook faster.

You’re looking to get the pork up to at least 145ºF per the USDA’s food safety guidelines. If you like a little less pink, you can take it to around 155ºF. Just be careful not to overcook. Like I mentioned in the intro, pork tenderloin can be unforgiving like chicken breast.

Once the crust has developed, in the last 20-30 minutes on the smoker, you’ll want to brush the smoked pork tenderloin with BBQ sauce. This adds extra flavor and helps prevent the pork from drying out. I used the Trader Joe’s sriracha garlic BBQ sauce from my BBQ smoked chicken meatballs recipe, but you can use any BBQ sauce.

You could also use a glaze with brown sugar and fruit juice or something acidic like hot sauce for a bit more kick. Or if you wanted to make your own, check out this honey BBQ sauce recipe.

In the photo above, you’re looking at air fryer smashed potatoes and citrusy garlic green beans. While you’d need to do a little time tinkering, my Traeger twice baked potatoes would be perfect for serving with pork tenderloin. Here’s a handful of other ideas:

Smoked

Traeger Smoked Pork Loin Recipe

Pork loin is one of my favorite cuts of meat because it's so versatile. You can roast it whole in the oven, slice it thin for sandwiches or paninis, or cut into chunks for stir fry dishes like kung pao pork. The best part about cooking with pork loin is that if you're careful not to overcook it then even when cooked through there's no dryness or toughness. Pork loin is also one of the leanest cuts with little to zero marbling, so it's a great cut for people following low calorie diets. Smoked pork loin is also naturally low carb so it works for diets like paleo and keto.

A pellet smoker is simply an electric oven that burns wood pellets instead of gas or charcoal. A pellet grill is great for beginners has become one of our favorite kitchen purchases this past year.

Boneless Pork Loin - we cooked a three pound pork roast. Trim off any excess fat or silver skin with a sharp knife.

Kosher Salt & Black Pepper - season to taste but remember that the salt and pepper and only touching the outside of the meat. When this is the case we season more generously than if we were salting a bite of food.

This easy smoker recipe only takes 5 minutes of prep time. A colorful, flavorful rub on the boneless pork and it's ready to go onto the Traeger.

Marinade - if you'd rather use a marinade than a dry rub try this marinade it is just as good on pork as it is on london broil. For some sweetness add a little apple juice.

Sauces - serve with a classic red barbecue sauce, white bbq sauce, applesauce (my kids love applesauce with their pork), or even good ole ketchup.

Vegetables - add vegetables like carrots and potatoes to the pellet smoker with the pork loin. Try smoked cauliflower or broccoli for low carb option! You really can cook almost anything in a smoker.

Brown Sugar - if you like a little sweetness on your meat feel free to add about half a cup of brown sugar to the rub.

Pork Loin On The Traeger

This smoked pellet grill pork recipe pairs well with cauliflower mash, smoked baked beans, or roasted vegetables. We enjoyed it with mashed sweet potatoes and grilled delicata squash. Traeger smoked pork loin is also delicious served on top of a salad!

The internal temperature of smoked pork loin should be between 145 degrees Fahrenheit and 160 degrees F when checked internally with a meat thermometer probe. We will take our pork off the grill at 140, cover it with aluminum foil, and let it rest to come up to temp at 145.

You do not need to wrap pork in foil when smoking. Most pellet grills will have a built-in drip tray and catch pan to avoid any juices from dripping and causing flare ups. If you wrap the pork in foil it will not absorb that delicious smoky flavor.

Traeger Smoked Pork Loin Roast

We keep pork moist by using a dry rub. Apply the dry rub to the pork loin an hour before smoking on your Traeger grill. Then, apply another coat of rub right before placing on pellet grill smoker .

This smoked pork loin recipe can also be cooked in a standard oven as a pork loin roast with the use of a digital meat thermometer to ensure it reaches the proper internal.
