A typical frose recipe contains rose wine, strawberries, a sweetener, and vodka. I decided to switch things up and make my own version of frose with my liquor of choice, tequila.
Strawberries & Cream Mudslide Recipe
While tequila and wine seem an unlikely pair, they actually complement each other quite well. I first tasted the combination at Chuy’s in their signature sangria. The sangria combines red wine, silver tequila, triple sec, fruit juices, and blueberry syrup into a delicious cocktail. It’s my favorite sangria. So, I decided to take a page from Chuy’s book and combine wine with tequila to create my frose.
Using frozen fruit is the key to a delicious frozen cocktail. It helps give the cocktail its slushie consistency, but you don’t sacrifice any flavor. Only using ice will water the cocktail down too much. I will use it at the end for a more frozen texture, but I prefer more frozen fruit over ice.
Next, add the rose wine to the blender. My wine of choice for this frose recipe is Dark Horse rose. It’s dry and crisp, so not overly sweet. It is also very affordable! A few of my other *affordable* favorite roses include Apothic, Summer Water, and Yes Way Rose.

There is no need to buy expensive wine for cocktails or sangria. Especially recipes that call for added flavors or sweeteners. Save the good stuff for sipping by itself!
Fill the blender about 3/4ths with rose. Next, add two shots of silver tequila. My tequila of choice is either Jose Cuervo or Espolon Blanco. The same rule of using inexpensive alcohol applies here as well. While I don’t recommend bottom-shelf tequila that tastes too strongly of alcohol, an affordable mid-shelf option is great for this type of cocktail.
Serve in a cocktail glass with a strawberry garnish, sugar rim, and a straw. To sugar, the rim of the glass, rub a bit of simple syrup along the glass rim. Then, dip the rim in a small bowl of sugar.

A homemade simple syrup lasts for about 6 months in the refrigerator. If it starts to appear cloudy, toss it out and make another batch!

Frozen tequila rose drinks, and frozen cocktails in general, are simple to prep ahead of time. Simply blend up the drinks and store them in the freezer until it’s time to serve them. The alcohol from the tequila, and the wine, keep the cocktail from totally freezing.
A frozen cocktail can be stored for several days in the freezer. Or take your frose with you to a party by storing it in a cooler full of ice inside a sealed container. You’d be the star of the show if you brought frose to the barbeque!
