I started eating these when I lived in Virginia and I absolutely love them. Now I live in the North West and can’t seem to find them anywhere. Luckily Walmart has them online and ship to store. I love them that much.
The Zesty Garlic Kosher Spears are literally my favorite food. I get such intense cravings for them that I salivate! I have always loved Mt. Olive dill pickles and I refuse to buy any others, as they’ve never been nearly as good. I remember being a kid and taking a 24 oz. jar to my room with a Stephen King novel and not coming out until the jar was empty–juice included! My mom asked, “Wasn’t that a new jar you just opened?” What can I say, I love my Mt. Olive dill pickles. I’ve even told my husband that if there’s a zombie apocalypse, we’re heading to Mt. Olive, NC so I won’t have to worry about running out. ???? Love it!
Easy Homemade Refrigerator Dill Pickles
We absolutely LOVE these Zesty Garlic pickles BUT the store we purchase them from has stopped stocking them and I’ve search within a 50 mile radius and it shows no stores selling these. We are extremely upset about this!! I am a picklehead and recipes like my quick dill pickles and my homemade spicy garlic dill pickles profess my love. Growing up, everything I ate had to have a pickle on it. Tuna sandwiches weren’t complete without long slices of kosher dills and my after-school snack of Triscuits, liverwurst, mustard, and dill hamburger chips was my favorite treat.
It wasn’t until later that I experienced my first taste of spicy-sweet bread and butter pickles. Standing on the dirt floor of my husband’s grandmother’s root cellar with just a bare light bulb shining the light, we used a screwdriver to pry open a jar of her famous bread and butter pickles. We dipped in right then and there. Those zesty pickles changed me and inspired this version of Grandma Tilly’s recipe.
Kosher Dill Pickles
As with any homemade pickle recipe, these bread and butter pickles require a variety of pickling spices to give them their unique flavor.
You can use really any variety of cucumber for this bread and butter pickle recipe but those with a thick skin such as Kirby cucumbers work best.
Contrary to the name, neither butter nor bread are ingredients you’ll find in these pickled cucumbers. Bread and butter pickles can be traced back to two Illinois farmers — Omar and Cora Fanning, who in 1923, filed for a patent for the name to use for their family pickles. The story goes, when Omar and Cora fell on hard times, they exchanged their pickles with their grocer for ding ding: bread and butter!

However, these pickles didn’t really begin to catch on until around the time of the Great Depression, when bread and butter pickles started appearing in American newspapers. Soon after, they could be found on the shelves of Piggly Wiggly Food Stores, and by 1943 they were recognized as an American pantry staple.
Bread and butter pickles skip the dill and have a sweeter flavor profile than dill pickles. Dill pickles are usually thicker-cut rounds or spears, less sweet, tend to have a crispier bite, and boast flavors of garlic and (you guessed it) — dill. I love both, so don’t make me choose!

Mt. Olive Zesty Garlic Kosher Spears
My family has been using this heirloom spicy dill pickle recipe for more than 70 years. A variation on George Smith Service Dill Pickles, our version comes from my mother, who copied the recipe onto an envelope sometime in the 1960's.
, but as a child thought that was because they were originally made for people in the armed services. (My family was full of vets: it's a natural assumption for a kid to make.)
As it turns out, I wasn't too far off the mark; but figuring that out took some work. When I first tried find a little background on this recipe, the only reference was a similar garlic dill pickle recipe from a member of the Daughters of Norway. I then reached out to my friend Gena, a genealogy expert who shares my love of heritage recipes and ephemera. Unfortunately, she was unable to find any reference to it among in her resources either.

, which I learned was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1942. This aligns directly with my family history: Pop moved his entire family to Portland from the midwest in 1943 to work in the shipyards during the war.
The origin of this pickle recipe, on the other hand, remains something of a mystery; nevertheless, they are delicious, and well worth both the effort and the wait!
Pickling season is one of my earliest memories. Or rather, the smells of pickling season. I remember when I was about three or four, sitting on the top basement step and listening to the sharp clink of mason jars, and breathing in the briny scent of warm cucumbers and garlic that wafted up from Pop's basement canning kitchen.

My job was to run up and down the stairs whenever anyone needed anything. Sitting at the top of the stairs was a good place to watch and stay out of trouble.
My mother, aunt, and grandpa made a line-assembly canning team worthy of Henry Ford. First there was Auntie (always a stickler for order) carefully packing fresh cucumbers into quart jars, puzzling more into each one than seemed humanly possible. Then Mom took the jar from her and searched for nooks and crannies between the tightly packed cucumbers, where she would pop in peppers, garlic, and dill before covering it all with a grape leaf blanket and lining it up on a clean tea towel.
When a batch was ready to be put into the canner, Pop would fill in the leftover spaces in each jar with hot, salty brine and place them in an enormous blue-speckled water-bath canner. They ran two canners for what seemed like all day: the work never ended until all the cucumbers were jarred. (
