Whether it’s sauteeing or stir frying vegetables, making them on the stovetop is often the fastest way to cook them. This tutorial will show you how to saute asparagus in just 10 minutes. The key to this simple sauteed asparagus recipe with garlic and lemon? Start with olive oil to saute, then add a lemon garlic butter at the end. (I use a similar method to make sauteed zucchini, too.)

Easy sauteed asparagus recipes on the stovetop work best with thin stalks. If you’ve got thicker stalks, try my roasted asparagus recipe instead.

Since it takes just 10 minutes from start to finish and uses common staples, this easy sauteed asparagus recipe makes a great last-minute side dish. You’ll need just 5 simple ingredients, plus salt and pepper:

The cooking time for asparagus will vary a bit on the size of your asparagus, and as I mentioned above, it does work best with thinner stalks. When the asparagus is thin, it will take just 5-8 minutes to cook.

When sauteed asparagus is done is somewhat of a personal preference. Once asparagus turns bright green, it can be considered ready, but many people prefer to cook it for an additional couple of minutes to soften it a bit more. In this lemon and garlic sauteed asparagus recipe, we saute it for a couple of minutes in garlic butter at the end.

Asparagus comes into season between April and July, making it a fresh and flavorful side dish to pair with all of your summer favorites, such as Garlic Salmon, Lamb Burgers, or grilled Cauliflower Steaks. With only 5 ingredients and 10 minutes of cook time, you’ll want to make this easy veggie side dish again and again!

Asparagus: The best asparagus has a bright green color and feels firm to the touch. Try to choose younger, thinner asparagus stalks as they’re less fibrous and woody than the thicker, older stalks.

Lemon juice: For some zest and a pop of fresh acidity in each bite. Feel free to use fresh juice or bottled.

Step 1: Prepare the asparagus. Snap the bottom 1-2 inches off of the asparagus and discard them. Drizzle the trimmed asparagus with some oil and season with some salt and pepper.

Step 2: Cook in the skillet. Heat a skillet over medium heat with the remaining oil. Place the asparagus spears in a single layer in the skillet and add the lid on top to steam. Add the lemon juice after a couple minutes, place the lid back on, and cook until fork tender.

Step 3: Remove and serve. Remove the asparagus from the heat and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Serve while hot with your favorite main dishes and sides.

To make it vegan friendly, swap the Parmesan cheese for a plant-based alternative or replace the cheese with slivered almonds or sautéed mushrooms and garlic.

Choose asparagus stalks that are the same size and width. This way, each stalk will be done cooking at the same time.

Cook time varies depending on the thickness of the asparagus. In general, asparagus is done cooking as soon as it turns bright green and is slightly firm. If you can stick a fork in it without too much resistance, it’s done!

Sautéed asparagus goes great next to grilled proteins like chicken, beef, or fish. My favorites are Seared Salmon or Steak Bites with asparagus, Grilled Corn Kale Salad, and cauliflower mash on the side. It’s also great as an addition to salads, like my Sundried Tomato Salad or Garlic Bacon Pasta.

Asparagus will let you know if it’s gone bad by having a rotten odor. It will also begin to become slimy and mushy, especially at the tips.

The bottom 1 to 2 inches of an asparagus spear is woody and tough, meaning it’s not great to eat. Remove this part either by snapping it off with your hands or using a sharp knife.

I am always happy to eat asparagus, some of my favorite ways to enjoy it include grilled asparagus foil packets and chicken asparagus stir fry. This sauteed asparagus is a simple yet satisfying way to get your veggies in with minimal effort!

We eat a fair amount of broccoli in this house, but when I’m looking to switch things up a bit in the green veggie department, I turn to asparagus. Asparagus is healthy and readily available most of the year. Best of all, my kids happily eat it! The bottom of asparagus stalks tends to be tough and woody, and isn’t that pleasant to eat. The best way to figure out where to trim your asparagus is to take a stalk and bend it. Wherever the stalk snaps is where the tender part starts and the tough part ends. From there, you can line up all your asparagus stalks and trim the bottom off in the same spot as where your original piece of asparagus snapped in half. For this recipe, you’ll want to cut your asparagus stalks into 1-2 inch sized pieces.

The key to cooking fresh asparagus to make sure it’s tender, but not overly soft. You’ll want to watch the asparagus closely as it cooks.
