Fried Strawberry Donut Recipe

The strawberry flavor and color in these donuts come from freeze-dried strawberries. You can buy them whole and either grind them into powder with a food processor or coffee grinder. Alternatively, you can buy them already powderized.

Sliced freeze-dried strawberries can be found in nearly all grocery stores-I purchase mine at Target. Place about 1 cup (18 grams) in a heavy-duty zippered bag and use a rolling pin to smash them until they are all powdered. You can also use a small food processor or coffee grinder for this process. You should end up with a scant 1/2 cup of powdered freeze-dried strawberries.

Before you begin heating the oil, set out all of the tools you’ll need. Have a slotted or holed metal spoon, a frying thermometer, a 6 quart pot, and a cooling rack with a baking sheet underneath it to set the fried donuts on.

Baked Strawberry Donuts (easy Recipe With Cake Mix!)

In a large mixing bowl, mix the melted butter and sugar until well combined. You can do this by hand or with a hand mixer.

Put the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet. Stir until the dry ingredients are completely mixed in. The dough should be fairly stiff, but still sticky and soft.

Place the donut batter on a sheet of plastic wrap and flatten it into a disc about 2″ thick. Wrap it well and refrigerate for at least an hour or up to 2 days.

Remove the strawberry donut dough from the refrigerator and place it on a floured surface. Roll it out to between 1/4″-3/8″ thick, then cut as many donuts as possible from the dough. Set the cut donuts aside.

When oil is the correct temperature, turn it down to medium-low to make sure it doesn’t over-heat. You will need to adjust and figure out the best setting for your burners to maintain the best temperature.

Flip each donut and fry the other side for another minute and a half. Remove them from the oil to the cooling rack.

Sift 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract into the milk. Whisk them together until you have a smooth, runny glaze.These fresh strawberry donuts are made with yeast dough, chunks of strawberries, and fried to perfection. I’ve used this donut dough base countless times and it’s never let me down. I’ve made Nutella stuffed donuts and jelly donuts using the same base because it’s that good. It’s a no-fail recipe. Although baked donuts are much easier to make, there is nothing better than a fried yeast donut.

Start by making the dough. Activate the yeast by mixing the warm water and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes to proof. Once the yeast becomes foamy, add the melted shortening, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, strawberries, and 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour. Mix well and then add the remaining flour one cup at a time. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it and let it rise for 2 hours.

Deep Fried Strawberry Shortcakes

Once the dough is done rising, lightly flour your working surface and knead the dough for 1-2 minutes with a rolling pin. Roll it out to a 9×13 rectangle and using a donut cutter, cut out the donuts. Cover the donut cutouts and let it rise for 45 minutes.

Once the 45 minutes are up, fry the donuts in vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side or until they’re golden brown.

Strawberry

Finally, prepare the glaze by mixing confectioners sugar, milk, and strawberry preserves in a bowl. Dip the donuts in the glaze and top off with fresh strawberries, if desired.
