Cooked up a storm when making one of the nation’s favourite dishes this week – by adding double cream and white wine to spaghetti bolognese.
Traditionally, the recipe has always included red instead of white wine – but Mary told her 2.2million-strong audience on BBC2’s Mary Berry Everyday: “I really prefer to add white”.
She then suggested another apparent cooking crime by saying: “After an hour in the oven my secret is to make it even richer by adding double cream.”

But the former Great British Bake Off’s controversial culinary choices aren’t the only odd options you can add to your spag bol.

Sainsbury’s says the little canned or jarred fish should be added to your sauce as it’s reducing down “creating a lovely extra flavour dimension”.

Several food blogging websites suggest they should be added alongside the traditional ragu sauce ingredients of tomatoes and passata to add an extra bitter kick.

“It does need more a flavour injection, so do taste your tomato sauce for seasoning and adjust it accordingly, ” the Sainsbury’s website says.
If you’re going to opt for turkey, try slow-cooking it for extra flavour depth and sprinkle the finished dish with a few fried sage leaves.
Heston Blumenthal uses the store cupboard staple in his sauce – typically alongside a range of other adventurous ingredients, including Tabasco, fish sauce, Worcestershire sauce and sherry vinegar.
