Unlike a traditional baked potato, the sweet potato has the option of going sweet or savory (more on that below), packs a ton of vitamins and nutrition, and is arguably the most kid-friendly vegetable on the planet.

How Can You Tell When a Sweet Potato Is Done? Sweet potatoes cannot keep a secret. When they’re done, the whole world will know it. They start to ooze out their sweet caramelized juice, wrinkle up a bit, and if you want to for sure make sure, just stab one with a fork or knife. The knife should slide in easily when a sweet potato is fully cooked.
I really do try to make sure all of my potatoes are roughly the same size and shape when making oven baked sweet potatoes. This means they will all get done at the same time and we can eat dinner together – winning!

The skin tends to not crisp up when it’s wrapped in foil. The rest of the process remains the same though. Just wrap the sweet potatoes in foil before placing in the oven. You will still want to use a baking sheet because the juices tend to find their way out of the foil.

You do not need to peel a sweet potato prior to cooking it in the oven. The skins of sweet potatoes are safe to eat, both raw and cooked, and contain nutrients such as fiber and antioxidants. Whether or not you peel the potato is completely personal preference. The skin will add a little texture, so if you are serving children or sensitive eaters, consider peeling the sweet potatoes before roasting.
Look for sweet potatoes with smooth skin and orange flesh (they are large and may be labeled by grocery stores as yams). Their color should be fairly even and they should not have soft or mushy spots.
In a cool, dark place sweet potatoes can last 2 to 3 weeks. If you store them on your counter, they last 1 to 2 weeks.

While the preparation methods are very similar, because sweet potatoes are more dense and less starchy than regular potatoes, they need longer to bake.

You can use any oil you like to roast these. My personal preference is coconut oil for the cinnamon sweet potatoes and olive oil or avocado oil for a savory side.
Easy, Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Cinnamon Coconut Sugar Sweet Potatoes – Roasted sweet potatoes always taste delicious with just a touch of sweetness (to enhance the natural sweetness!) and cinnamon.I love cutting sweet potatoes into medallion shapes when I’m this sweet version. Something about the medallion shape makes them magically extra delicious. You can use coconut sugar or brown sugar!
With savory spices. I like adding chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and kosher salt for a delicious smoky, garlicky flavor. You can also cut them into longer pieces for sweet potato fries.
These savory sweet potatoes are delicious with bacon and a fried egg for breakfast, alongside salmon, black beans or in meal-prep lunch bowls.
